The Other Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook

How to Identify Anthrax

Anthrax is a disease caused by the bacterium bacillus anthracis and named after a heavy metal band from the Eighties. Since anthrax can cause many adverse effects that will kill you, it is important to know how to recognize it, how the disease manifests itself, and what to do if you think you have it.

Identifying and Avoiding Anthrax

Most doctors agree that the best way to avoid anthrax is by not coming into contact with bacillus anthracis. Therefore do not go near any of the following:

--Dead livestock
--Livestock that isn't dead yet
--White powder in envelopes
--White powder not in envelopes
--The film "Powder"
--Envelopes in general
--Mailboxes, post offices, or mail carriers
--Congress
--Reporters for a daily metropolitan newspaper (exception: Superman)
--Crop dusters
--Crops
--Dusters
--Dust

If you believe you have discovered bacillus anthracis, contact your local authorities immediately. Be sure to scream a lot and exaggerate if necessary. Remember, it is their responsibility to respond to every single report, and they are glad to do it because they are not all that busy...
